Porsche 914-6 GT: If You Can’t Buy One, Build One (Video)

By -

Only 48 Porsche 914-6 GTs left the factory, and it is the best 914 ever. So, how can you get one today without paying a small fortune?

In 1969, Porsche was selling the 914 and 914/6 as its entry-level models in the U.S. The 914s are put together in the Karmann factory alongside cars from Volkswagen. The 914-6 is built in Karmann and then sent to Stuttgart to install the 911T six-cylinder engine. At the time, Porsche had a wide fender GT package, which it gave the nickname 914-6 GT. In 1970, Porsche took the 914-6 GT to the 24 hours of Le Mans to see how the mid-engine sports car would perform. One of the 914-6 GT factory cars finished sixth overall and won its class, beating many other Porsches, including 911s. While the 914-6 was proving itself on the racetrack, it was suffering on the showroom floor.

The Porsche 914-6 was expensive to produce and only slightly cheaper than the base 911. This hurt sales numbers of the six-cylinder 914 and Porsche chose to discontinue the model in 1972, selling only 3,351 914-6s. The 914-6 GT was one of the rarest of them all, with only 48 coming out of the Porsche factory. So, finding a Porsche 914-6 GT on your local Craigslist may present a challenge. Additionally, the little Porsche with the bulging fender will set you back a pretty penny. So, how does one go about owning a GT?

Well, you do what anyone who wants a 427 Shelby Cobra does: Build it yourself. In the above video from Jay Leno’s Garage, there is a beautiful yellow 914-6 GT tribute, and its owner tells us all about the car. Luckily for 914-6 GT fans, Porsche sold a ton of four-cylinder 914s, over 118,000 worldwide. So, as the owner of the GT in the video did, you can make one from a regular 914. As with any project like this, we ask you to take lots of pictures and post them in the Rennlist forums so we can all enjoy it with you.
