Miraculously no one was killed but three rally spectators were taken to the hospital for treatment.

All forms of motorsport are dangerous for the drivers. However, rally racing is dangerous not just to those participating but also to those that are spectating. Oftentimes the crowd is right along the rally route as cars at the limit of traction go speeding by. As a spectator it is thrilling to be so close to the action. However, if something goes wrong there are often terrible consequences. According to a report by the Daily Mail something did go wrong at the Madeira Wine Rally in Portugal. A Porsche 911 that was competing in the race lost control coming around a turn and ploughed into a group of spectators. Thankfully no one was killed in the crash. However, an adult and two children were taken to the hospital and treated for injuries.

The Madeira Wine Rally has been an annual event since 1959. It is one of the most prestigious events in the area, but it has not been without tragedy. At the 2022 event an eight-year-old girl was killed while she was crossing the track. On the rally webpage the following disclaimer is posted: “Despite the organizers taking all reasonable precautions, unavoidable accidents may occur. With respect to these, remember that you are present at your own risk.”

The Porsche involved in the crash was reportedly driven by Americo Gouveia. The 911 drifts around the corner but is unable to regain control as it enters a straight section of roadway. The car then goes nose first into a crowd of spectators standing by the side of the road. The only thing between the car and the people is a thin band of tape that obviously offers no protection. The Porsche strikes the people as well as another car that is parked in the driveway. The Porsche comes to a rest in the street after completing a 270-degree spin.

Several spectators are left lying on the ground after the crash. Officials confirmed an adult, and two children were injured and taken to the hospital. The extent of their injuries is not known at this time. Rally organizers released a statement that said: “The victims were assessed at the scene before being taken to hospital, which had been put on alert to receive them as a precaution. As soon as we have more information it will be released.” We hope that everyone involved makes a full and speedy recovery. We love the sport of rally racing, and of course enjoy seeing the Porsche 911 compete. However, nobody likes to see a crash like this.
