Porsche 911 GT3: The Best Version Ever, Says Top Gear

The latest iteration of the GT3, as Chris Harris finds, is Porsche’s finest.

Porsche’s GT3 models for the 911 are for die-hard enthusiasts that enjoy dominating at track days while still having a high-performance sports car that’s comfortable on the road. The second version of the GT3 on the 991 platform features a lot of updates over the previous model and all of those changes, as Top Gear’s Chris Harris found, come together to create one of the best cars on sale at the moment.

Harris, got out of a 911R to test drive the GT3 and states that the new, 4.0-liter flat-six is a much better than the 3.8-unit that it replaces. The 4.0-liter engine pumps out 500 horsepower and 339 lb-ft of torque, can rev all the way out to 9,000 rpm, and makes a glorious sound that makes the vehicle sound like a “complete event,” says Harris.

Those aren’t the only changes, but there’s no way we, or even Harris, could cover all of the changes Porsche made to the new GT3. But what Harris can do is show viewers just how enjoyable and capable the new machine is. And the television host does so in traditional fashion by thrashing the car around a racetrack and drifting the vehicle with ease. As Harris puts it, the GT3 “is in a class of one.”

There is one downside to the GT3, though, and that comes down the vehicle’s price and the fact that Porsche won’t be making enough for everyone to get one. But for the individuals that are on the list, Harris claims that they’re in for a treat and are lucky. The 911R may be the most sought-after 911 from recent history, but the GT3, as Harris finds, is a special car.
