Porsche 911 & Bugatti Chiron Wreck Each Other in the Swiss Alps
Collision between the Porsche 911 and Bugatti resulted in more than $4 million worth of damage; one occupant was sent to the hospital.
Imagine a lovely summer day in the Swiss Alps. You wake up and decide you want to go for a bit of a spirited drive. You scout out a location for just such a run. A blast through the Gotthard Pass should do the trick. You hop in your prized 911 GTS Cabriolet, drop the top, and you are off. At some point in your drive you are joined by the king of hypercars, the Bugatti Chiron. This is starting out to be a pretty fantastic day. However, the end of the day is much different. The dream turns into a $4 million nightmare.
The Gotthard Pass may be a wonderful road to stretch the legs of your sports car. However, it is also used by vacationers piloting their motorhomes. Motorhomes can be a fun way to vacation but not something you want to be stuck behind when you are out in your sportscar. According to the report from website 20min.ch the combination of the slow-moving motorhome and impatient drivers could have led to the multi-million-dollar wreck.
It appears that the motorhome was towards the front of a pack of cars heading up the pass. Behind the motorhome was the Porsche 911 and Bugatti. The Porsche driver decided it was time to pass the slow-moving traffic and moved out to overtake the set of vehicles in front. The problem was the Bugatti driver that was directly behind the Porsche had the same idea at the same time. With 1,500 horsepower underfoot the Bugatti quickly collided with the Porsche. The Porsche seemed to take most of the damage as it also smashed into a Mercedes wagon. The Bugatti also clipped the motorhome.
A passenger in the Mercedes was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. There were no reports of other injuries. At least not to humans, which is of course the most important thing. Still, you can’t help but to be a little sick to your stomach looking at the carnage on the road.
On the YouTube channel of Bear Bogu there is a brief, low-quality video of the aftermath. The Instagram account of vdhautomotive shows a few additional pictures of the damaged vehicles. Being a mountain pass, there is a decent drop off the one side of the road, so it is fortunate no one was more seriously injured.
Anytime a Porsche is written off, especially a lovely 911 GTS, it is a sad day. However, a wreck that also takes out a Chiron, that is an unfathomable loss to the automotive world. Hopefully, the occupant of the Mercedes makes a full recovery, and the other drivers are a little more careful the next time they attempt to pass a line of cars on a mountain road.
