Porsche 356A Speedster Is a Compact with a Big History

Every once in a while, something truly breathtaking makes an appearance, and we just have to stop and take a second to admire it. This 1957 Porsche 356A Speedster is nothing short of the epitome of that thought. Finding an authentic Speedster is not something that happens a lot, and this one is in absolutely astonishing condition.
This beautiful piece of Porsche history is currently listed for sale on Bring A Trailer. At the time of writing, it already has a bid north of $150,000, and it’s safe to assume this is far from the ending price.
A 1,600 cubic centimeter flat-four engine powers the iconic Porsche 356A speedster. The 356 is the car that launched Porsche all the way back in 1948 and would continue production until 1964 when it was ultimately replaced by the 911.
This particular Porsche 356A Speedster is said to have been delivered in white. However, the car underwent a full refurbishment by Weldon Scrogham approximately 20 years ago. It spent time in a private collection before it was acquired by the current owner in 2014. As you can see, it has since been refinished in green.
The odometer reads an incredible 7,000 miles. According to the ad, 700 of those miles have been added by the current owner. However, the actual mileage of this car, like many of this vintage, is unknown. Despite this being the case, both the interior and exterior have been gone through with a fine-toothed come. So much so that you wouldn’t have a hard time believing that the mileage on the odometer was legitimate.
You’d be hard-pressed to find another 356A Speedster in this kind of condition for sale. That begs the question: how much will it sell for?
Worth its weight in goldÂ
That’s a tough question to answer. However, we are more than confident that it will soar far beyond its current $150,000 bid. For reference, another 356A Speedster sold on Bring A Trailer in March for a cool hammer price of $325,000. Like this car, that Speedster was also originally delivered in white and remained during restoration. While we can’t place a final figure on the price point, it is safe to assume that this Speedster will fetch a similar price.
No matter the final selling price, we are excited just to get a chance to see this beautiful car. Seeing a real 356 out and about is getting rarer and rarer. When you see one, it is generally at a car show or on display in a museum. It is truly exciting to see one that spends at least a small bit of its time on the road.
We’ll definitely be keeping a close eye on this auction. As with any car of this caliber, our only hope is that the auction winner will take it out for an eventual cruise. After all, this car was developed and built to be enjoyed on the road, not in a garage.
