New Porsche 918 Design Concept: Hypercar Gets a Refresh

Russian designer dreams up what a new Porsche 918 would look like.

Let’s face it, we’re never going to see a new Porsche 918. After all, mid-cycle refreshes are for mainstream models, not hypercars. Rather, the 918 will simply go down in Porsche history as another in a long line of legendary performance models. But what if it didn’t? What if Porsche decided to buck that trend and update the styling of the 918 instead? Well, it might look something like this.

What you see is the work of Russian designer Aksyonov Nikita. Nikita has been busy drawing up various Porsche models that implement modern styling lately, and the 918 represents his latest effort. We recently showed you his vision of a new, Mission E inspired 959 and 718 Boxster, but this particular project is equally ambitious.

In his attempt to refresh the 918, Nikita worked some modern Porsche magic into the front and rear of the car. The front end captures that distinctive Mission E styling with its LED headlights. And instead of using a pair of haunches near each headlight, the “918 S” features one single, centrally located “fin.”

Out back, you’ll find the now familiar taillight that spans the entire width of the car. And interestingly, a two tone paint treatment breaks up the lines of the car nicely. That separation serves to make the car look lower and slimmer.

Of course, this design exercise is only an exercise. Porsche will build a successor to the 918 one day, but only introduces a new hypercar every decade or so. That car won’t be a new version of the 918, either, but rather an entirely new car. But that won’t stop us from admiring Nikita’s efforts and wondering what could have been.
