New 2017 Porsche 911 R Races a Satellite

For those of you complaining about the new turbos in the 718 Boxsters, perhaps it’s time to save up those pennies and upgrade to the 911 R. (Just forget that they’re already allegedly sold out.)

There’s no turbocharging going down in the 911 R, which recently debuted at the Geneva Motor Show. This purist’s delight features a 500-horsepower 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six that jumps to 200 mph. And you can see it being put to good use in the rollicking video below.

The beautifully shot clip starts with tracking shots from a spy satellite, which detects the object, and zeroes in. But before the satellite can close in on the stripped-down R, the driver downshifts, manually (!!!), and makes off like the wind. The object disappears from the satellite’s sights.

Fortunately, the folks filming the spot still had a bead on it, because the R — the lightest in the current 911 range — gets put through its tail-wagging paces over some stunning terrain, the only soundtrack that of its thunderous exhaust.

In a high-tech game of cat and mouse, the Porsche soon stops to let the satellite catch up. But the Porsche bolts again. Poof. Not even a spaceship can catch the 2017 Porsche 911 R.
