Porsche 911 GT2 RS Drag Races McLaren 720S in Epic Battle!

FuelRun drag racing brings out some tough competitors. And the Porsche versus McLaren grudge match is a scorcher.

In this video by Drag Times, we get to see some hot track action from the recent FuelRun event in Miami. Host Brooks Weisblat is the perfect guide for going behind the scenes, and giving us all the info. And this video features a thrilling set of competitors: a Porsche 911 GT2 RS versus a McLaren 720 S.

First things first, the McLaren 720S features a 4.0-liter twin-turbo engine that generates 710 horsepower and 568 lb.-ft of torque. The power is sent to the rear wheels by a dual-clutch automatic gearbox. McLaren quotes a 0-60 mph time of less than 2.8 seconds, a quarter-mile time of 10.3 seconds and a top-speed of over 212 mph for the 720S.

On the other hand, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS gets a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged engine that produces 690 horsepower and 553 lb.-ft of torque in its factory specification. However, the GT2 RS in the above video, which belongs to PetFred, makes 830 horsepower. For reference, even the $950,000 McLaren Senna and the Ferrari 812 Superfast do not produce as much horsepower.

The engine of the 911 GT2 RS is based on the engine of the Porsche 991.2 Turbo S and it is paired to a 7-speed PDK gearbox, which sends the power to the rear axle. Porsche says the factory spec GT2 RS can sprint from 0-60 miles per hour in 2.7 seconds and achieve a maximum top speed of 211 mph, although we know that it is capable of reaching nearly 220 mph. Of course, do bear in mind, the GT2 RS has got an enormous rear wing, which creates a lot of downforce but also plenty of drag. And drag negatively affects the straight line speed of a vehicle.

Even so, the GT2 RS and the 720S are closely matched in straight line performance and also price–indeed the Porsche had an MSRP of nearly $295,000 at launch, while the 720S has a starting price of around $290,000. Having said that, unlike the McLaren 720S, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS is a limited-edition vehicle. Porsche has produced only 500 units of the supercar, which also competes with the limited-edition Ferrari 488 Pista.

Coming back to the drag race, Weisblat is behind the wheel of the McLaren, which gives us some cool shots of the interior and the driver’s POV. Both cars have cameras mounted on them so we get a lot of great track footage. The two cars go head-to-head for three runs on the quarter mile. We won’t reveal the results, because that would ruin the video for you. But all we can say is, it is as close as one would expect after reading the comparable specifications of the two vehicles. Check it out, it is definitely a thrilling ride.
