For all those Porsche purists out there that have been crying about the death of the manual transmission in the 911, and the recent revelation that the 911 would only come with a turbocharged motor in the future, you can quit crying. According to a recent rumor from Road & Track, Porsche is hard at work creating something to satisfy all those that mourn the loss of the classic 911 layout.

While the rumor doesn’t say the car will be air-cooled, lose a million pounds, get rid of the amazing four-wheel steering system, or drop the electrically assisted steering rack, the new car is said to hark back to Porsches of old. The rumor states that the new car, dubbed the 911 R, will be a manual-only supercar, and that it will make use of the new 991 GT3’s 3.8-liter flat-six engine without the aid of turbos.

R&T states that only 600 of these 911 Rs will be built, and that each and every one of them has already been bought through the Porsche Preferred Program. That means that this car will be an instant classic because not only will it be rare, but it could truly be the last of the great, naturally aspirated, manual 911s.

What do you all think of the decision from Porsche to possibly only build 600 of these cars? Are they shooting themselves in the foot by not offering more when there could be so many other people that want a car like this? Sound off in the comments below.
