Homologation specials were ways for automakers to meet a specific racing requirement that forced manufacturers to create a certain number of street-legal vehicles before racing with the vehicle. The rule brought about some of the most incredible cars in the world, including this amazing 1996 Porsche 911 GT2 Evo.

According to Motor Authority, this incredibly rare GT2 Evo just sold for a mind-boggling $1.45 million at Mecum’s 2017 Original Spring Classic auction in Indianapolis, Ind. That let the GT2 Evo earn the title of being the most expensive car at the auction.

Porsche, as the outlet reports, built just 11 units of the 911 GT2 Evo, which was enough to let automaker race in GT1 events with the 996-series 911 GT1. The supercar was a near clone of the racecars that dominated on the track with a 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six that cranked out 600 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque. Those are some menacing numbers for a vehicle from the ‘90s.

The engine wasn’t the only thing that made the 911 GT2 Evo nearly identical to the race-going vehicle, as the wide body kit and aggressive styling pushed the envelope for what was acceptable at the time. There’s a bold front end with a prominent splitter, large vents for the oil and brake cooling, and not one, but two inlets on the hood.

The rear end, though, is where the magic is at, with a double-deck spoiler for maximum downforce that looks like it belongs on an airplane. As one would expect, the interior is stripped out and geared towards those that want to go fast without having any comfort features. No GPS, no heated seats, no cameras, cars from the ‘90s were just better.

The specific example, as Motor Authority points out, only traveled 4,350 miles. Is it worth $1.45 million? The buyer definitely thinks it is, and with the air-cooled 911 bubble at an all-time-high, this 911 GT2 Evo could fetch even more money in the future.
