Holiday Gift Ideas: Porsche Boxster & Cayman: The Complete Story
Historical book with great photos covers automaker’s mid-engined two-seaters.
The Boxster and the Cayman — both of which are mid-engined two-seaters built by Porsche — receive a worthy historical review in Porsche Boxster and Cayman: The Complete Story, by author Johnny Tipler. From Crowood Press UK, the nearly-200-page hardcover features over 400 photographs, many of which were specifically commissioned for the book and taken by photographer Antony Fraser.
Released in 1996, the Boxster roadster received its name by mashing up the words “boxer” (which referred to the car’s flat engine) and the word “roadster” (referring to the vehicle’s two-seater capacity and convertible top). The Cayman coupe, which went on sale in 2005, was not named after the Cayman Islands, but rather the reptile caiman.
Tipler’s “Porsche Boxster and Cayman: The Complete Story” follows the design and development of both vehicles, from their origins to their face-lifts over the years. The book also covers some of the author’s international driving experiences at the wheel of both cars. Also included is an interview with racer Rebecca Jackson, who describes the techniques of Boxster racing and demonstrates its versatility. Car historian Tipler has written over 35 books on a variety of automotive topics and is a regular contributor to “911 & Porsche World,” “Classic Porsche,” “Total 911,” and “Porsche Post” magazines.
Not having seen an actual copy of “Porsche Boxster and Cayman: The Complete Story,” we are unable to give the book a thorough evaluation. Customer reviews on Amazon.com though have been mixed, ranging from “well thought-out history of the Porsche Boxster/Cayman” to “numerous wrong statistics” and “nearly every photo caption is incorrect or inaccurate.”
