Gunther Werks 993 Speedster

Gunther Werks 993 Speedster will be revealed on August 13, but this sneak peek means you can drop your jaw early.

The folks at Gunther Werks have produced a number of stunning restomod Porsche 993 models over the years. Their latest project is to build a 993 Speedster. Of course, Porsche themselves have produced a number of Speedster models over the decades. The Speedster is typically a limited release model, but none have been as limited as the 993 era cars. Officially Porsche only ever made two examples of a 993 Speedster and one of them resides in the company museum. To put that in context, Porsche produced 1,948 991 generation Speedsters. That makes them about as common as a Toyota Camry compared to the 993 Speedster.

So, it is with bated breath that we await the release of the Gunther Werks 993-based Speedster. August 13 will be the official reveal at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. However, we get our best look yet at the car prior to the official unveiling courtesy the Gunther Werks Instagram page. And of course, as expected the car looks absolutely stunning.

If you are familiar with other Gunther Werks builds, you will immediately recognize the duck tail spoiler at the rear. Another tell-tale Gunther Werks feature that can be seen here are the huge flared rear fenders. This is a sexy view and likely the only view most fellow drivers will see. Final power figures have not been released but the car is expected to make more than the 435-horsepower available in the 400R coupe. The 4.0L flat six is built by Rothsport Racing and will drive the rear wheels via an upgraded version of the original 993 6-speed transmission.

Some of the other pics that Gunther Werks have released offer a glimpse of other aspects of the new car. We get to see the Brembo brake setup as well as the beautifully crafted headers. Other details we can pickup is the quilted leather in the engine bay area. The car will be exquisitely built just like everything else that the Gunther Werks crew produces. The Speedster will utilize carbon fiber body work. The car comes standard with a short front windshield; however, the buyer can option to have no windshield at all installed. Driving googles are not included.

The Speedster will be built in limited numbers and quite expensive like other Gunther Werks cars. Only 25 examples of the 993-based Speedster will be produced beginning in early 2022. While final pricing has not yet been announced the old adage of if you have to ask, you can’t afford it, certainly applies here. Consider that the 400R coupe starts at about $565,000 and the Speedster will likely command a premium over that car. Don’t expect much change back from your million-dollar bill. Of course, quality and exclusivity rarely come cheap.

August 13 will be here before we know it and we will get our first full look at this new masterpiece. However, based on what we have seen already and the reputation of Gunther Werks, we have no doubt that the 993-based Speedster will be the stuff of dreams for most. And the stuff of reality for 25 lucky owners.
