Electric GT Shows Off Porsche 964 EV Swap At SEMA

Electric GT Porsche 911 Swap EV

Electric GT Offers no-frills EV swap for Porsche chassis that is a simple plug-and-play solution. Is this suave or sacrilege?

For some, the thought of removing the iconic flat-six from the rear of a classic air-cooled generation 911 for an electric motor may sound outright offensive. However, it’s hard to argue with the massive performance offered by electric motors. Additionally, many likely worry about the repercussions to the chassis that comes from an EV swap. Finally, nobody wants to take an angle grinder to a classic Porsche. However, Electric GT went out of its way to make its offering entirely different.

Displayed at SEMA 2021 in this 964 Porsche 911, EV swapping powerhouse company Electric GT shows off their plug-and-play solution for a 911 EV swap. Currently, they offer this kit for 964 generation cars, including both the 911 and the 912. Additionally, they make a swap kit for A and B series Porsche models from 1964 to 1969. Sure, it’s hard to want to let go of the iconic engine in the rear of these cars, even if you don’t own one. However, the thought of having a zero-maintenance classic 911 that owners can drive every single day is pretty enticing. Let’s take a look at the specs.

The Electric GT Porsche 911 Makes Impressive Power

The Electric GT eGT-913 system is the kit displayed on the SEMA car. It makes an impressive 435 horsepower thanks to its Tesla large drive unit. Even in turbo format, the highest-powered 964 in stock format still lacks almost 100 horsepower as compared to the Electric GT example. We know, apples and oranges. Still, one can only imagine how much of a blast it is to be behind the wheel of this thing. Coupling that power with the instant torque of an electric motor and the planted and refined handling of the 964 chassis must be a dream come true.

Speaking of the handling, don’t expect the Electric GT kit to upset it. While it does slightly alter the weight distribution, it leaves it at 45/55 front-to-rear weight distribution.

Everything Comes With a Price

The kit includes the complete ready-to-rock bolt-in kit, including the motor, wiring harness, battery, and everything you need to swap it in. Furthermore, each Electric GT conversion kit is bench tested before delivery so that every customer is getting a motor they can plop in and enjoy.

According to the Electric GT website, the base cost of this conversion kit is $55,000. There are a couple of options that stack that price, too. Things like DC fast charging, a thermal management kit for cold-weather climates, gauge packages, and others can soar the price to over $60,000. However, that price doesn’t seem too bad when you look at something like the Everrati electric 911, which costs around $350,000 and doesn’t include the car.

Ultimately, we recognize that an EV conversion is not for everyone. However, it does offer a fantastic opportunity for those looking to modernize their classic Porsche. Furthermore, if any project owners are in possession of a 964 or a classic 1964-1969 Porsche 911 or 912 and only lack an engine, this may be a tremendous opportunity for the shell sitting lonely in the garage. Either way, we are glad we got a chance to check this system out in person.
