Daytona 24-winning Porsche 962 will make any time Miller Time for the winning bidder at Mecum’s upcoming August auction.

The Eighties were an amazing time for motorsport, especially if you were Porsche. From the Rothmans Porsche Rally 911 SC/RS in the early days of Group B, to the Porsche 2708 in the CART era of IndyCar, there was plenty of fun to be had at Stuttgart. But none of those would compare to the utter dominance Porsche had over Group C and its trans-Atlantic sibling, IMSA GTP. The two-pronged 956/962 attack took home trophies and champions from the first days of the category to the day Nissan stepped up their game in the final days.

It is from this period we come upon five-time Le Mans champion Derek Bell’s favorite 962, one of 600 vehicles and other lots set to hit the auction block during Mecum Auctions’ 2018 trip to Monterey, California August 23 through 25.

Not only is this 962 Bell’s favorite, having won the 1989 24 Hours of Daytona and Palm Beach Grand Prix in it, but it is the fastest 962 of its day, thanks to then-owner Jim Bubsy’s friend Ed Pink wringing 830 horses out of the 3.0-liter turbocharged flat-six. Bell shared his seat with fellow legends Mario Andretti, Jochen Mass, Bob Wolleck, and others, taking home a total of five wins among 11 top-five qualifying positions.
