1977 Porsche 911S Targa

Porsche enthusiast spent two years bringing 911 back to like-new condition.

Quick, what’s the most hated color in the world of cars? We’d say probably pink, but it’s followed closely by brown. Sure, every UPS man’s favorite hue instantly reminds us of the ’70s. But in the case of this pristine 1977 Porsche 911S Targa, is that such a bad thing? After all, the 911 is one of the few cars from that era that still looks great today.

We spotted the Chocolate Brown classic over in the Hemmings classifieds, where it was recently up for grabs with a $47,999 list price. For that, you get a unique, numbers-matching car fresh off a full restoration. The current owner purchased the 911 from the man who spent two years bringing it back to like-new condition. The car shows 105,224 undocumented miles, with 800 on the freshly rebuilt engine.

The restoration included fresh layers of that paint, an original Porsche hue back then. While Chocolate Brown probably isn’t even close to being the most popular color choice on ’70s 911s, it is unique. And in a world of cookie cutter red and black cars, we think it’s a refreshing change, nonetheless.

This 911S Targa is a very original car, but a couple of small changes were made during the restoration. That bright green side script is obviously not original to this car. And neither is the ducktail spoiler. The Fuchs wheels are original to the car, but the previous owner finished them in RSR style.

Overall, it’s a very tasty package that marks a nice deviation from your average, everyday early 911. We certainly wouldn’t be embarrassed to tool around in this brown Porsche, and we doubt anyone else would be either.
