Cops use Cayman to connect with locals and improve road safety.

For most young drivers, the sight of any police car can be rather terrifying. And depending on what you’re driving, seeing a Porsche Cayman GT4 police car can be very terrifying. But police in Norfolk, England are using that exact car to do something altogether different: break down barriers with young drivers.

The Norfolk Constabulary intend to use the donated Cayman not to chase down speeders and hand out tickets, but rather to engage motorists in discussions about road safety. Particularly young drivers, who represent a large portion of crashes in Norfolk county. In the last five years alone, 61 young Norfolk drivers have died and 504 have suffered serious injury.

Chief Constable Simon Bailey believes that the Cayman will help officers get through to Norfolk youth so they can reduce those numbers going forward. “The GT4 will certainly attract a lot of attention – but that’s the whole idea. We hope the car will act as a conversation starter, which gives us the opportunity to engage with people, but more importantly those hard-to-reach groups like young drivers, and offer practical advice as well as describing what can happen when things go wrong.”

Graham Dacre, from the Lind Trust, agrees that the sight of a Porsche will help engage young drivers. “This is an important initiative to be involved in. The Porsche GT4 is every young drivers dream and it will be a talking point in their world; I can see them responding well to this initiative.”

The GT4 will make the rounds at local events and car shows, as well as schools and colleges. The program even has its own hashtag – #Porsche999. And while the idea of police connecting with young drivers might seem a little far fetched at first, keeping our kids safe is a worthwhile cause that everyone can get behind.
