Wet & Wild Highlights of the 2020 Porsche Carrera Cup: Track Time Tuesday
Porsche performance and grip shined as the rain poured down at the annual Porsche Carrera Cup.
If there is one thing you can count on for 2020: don’t count on anything. This was likely the thoughts of many drivers at last weekend’s Porsche Carrera Cup in Le Mans. The annual motorsport event got an unexpected twist by Mother Nature. But despite the rain, Porsche rose to the occasion. If anything, the unexpected rainfall gave everyone a reminder of how exceptionally Porsche performs under pressure.
Since its debut in 1990, the Porsche Carrera Cup one-make series has brought us not only thrilling racing action, but introduced us to the next up and coming drivers, and Porsche’s most cutting edge cars. The Porsche Carrera Cut Deutschland (PCCD) plans the race every year, one week prior to 24 Hours of Le Mans. While this year’s 24 Hours pushed the 919 Hybrid and 911 RSR to their limit; the PCCD focuses solely on the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.
With 53 GT3 Cups representing from 15 countries, the 45-minute race included tons of Porsche fun; piloted by new drivers and established stars alike.
The weekend kicked off with plenty of sunshine going into the qualifying lap. Florian Latorre (France) posted pole position. But as the rain moved in, it presented the added challenge of navigating a wet track.
When the race kicked off, Dutch driver Loek Hartog dominated with his 485 hp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.
But fellow countryman Larry ten Voorde as well as Latorre put up a fight. Soon it became a face-off between Hartog and ten Voorde.
This was a memorable and exciting race. And, it was a true head-to-head–or rather Porsche-to-Porsche–battle. Given the track conditions, cars would bunch together. Porsche performance was the main event: with gripping slipstream duels and beautifully executed overtaking maneuvers.
In the end ten Voorde came out the winner. As such, ten Voorde rose to the top of the official 24 Hours of Le Mans podium.
“A win at Le Mans! I’m ecstatic,” said ten Voorde, Nebulus Racing by Huber. “During the race, I managed to come out on top after several duels and, ultimately, that proved to be decisive.â€
“We witnessed an action-packed and gripping race right up to the final corner,” said Hurui Issak, Project Manager of Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland. “This is exactly the level of competition that the Porsche one-make cups are known for. It was impressive seeing more than 50 Cup cars provide great motor racing on the historic Le Mans circuit.â€
