Chromaflair GT2 RS

The GT2 RS is a special car but adding a six-figure Chromaflair Explosive Gold paint job takes it to the next level.

A 2018 911 GT2 RS will set you back about $400K in the current market. That might sound like a lot of money, well actually it is a lot of money. But for that sum you are getting a 700 horsepower Porsche track weapon. These are special machines that will be collectible for years to come. But what if a “regular” GT2 RS is just not special enough for you? Well, you would want the GT2 RS in Chromaflair Explosive Gold. The paint option alone added about $100,000 to the price of the car when it was new. And that price premium is being reflected in the used market as well. The car you see pictured here was recently sold by Graham Rahal Performance and it had a list price of $599,995.

The GT2 RS sold here had just 2,450 miles on the odometer. But that is not too unusual. Most of these cars sit in private collections and are rarely get driven. Finding one with low miles is not uncommon. However, Chromaflair Explosive Gold is uncommon. This may very well be the only GT2 RS in the world in this color. And whether you like it or not, someone paid an extra $200K on top of the going GT2 RS rate to put this in their garage.

Chromaflair Explosive Gold

Explosive Gold

Porsche offered Chromaflair in several colors. There was Explosive Gold that we see here as well as Urban Bamboo, Violet and Python Green. All of the colors shift shades depending on the lighting and viewing angle. This is done by using tiny, one micrometer thick flakes of aluminum coated with shiny magnesium fluoride. This incredible paint job makes regular paint to sample cars seem downright boring.

Practicality

GT2 RS

Most GT2 RS owners are already afraid to drive their cars. They fear that mileage will hurt the future value. Now imagine that your GT2 RS has a six-figure paint job. That has to drive up the anxiety level with each mile. Getting a rock chip or a door ding in this paint is going to be an expensive proposition to make right. PPF is a must, but even with that it is unlikely that the new owner will ever drive this car. As it is the car is being driven less than 500 miles per year. That is a shame considering the incredible performance that this car is capable of.

Car Specifications

Interior

Outside of the insane paint job the rest of this GT2 RS is relatively normal. If you look inside, you will see there is gold contrast stitching that plays well with the exterior color. Nothing else inside the car would tip you off to the extreme exterior paint treatment. The question is do you feel the paint color is worth the upcharge? If you have over half a million dollars to spend on a toy that you will rarely drive, it probably is worth it to you. Although, we suspect most people would be just as happy with a GT2 RS in a standard color and an extra $200K in their pockets.
