It may be painted in a Ferrari color, but this 911 GT2 Clubsport is the ultimate air-cooled 911.

The 993 generation is revered as it is the last of the air-cooled 911s. They have all become collectible and as a result quite valuable. The 993 Turbo really gets the heart racing. A 993 Turbo S makes collectors go wild. But a 993 GT2 with the Clubsport package sits at the top of the 993 mountain for desirability and of course value.

The car you see pictured here is a 1996 Porsche 911 GT2 Clubsport for sale by Classic Driver in Monaco. The asking price is an astronomical $2,182,830. But if you consider that one just sold at Monterey in August for $2,012,500, the asking price doesn’t seem so far out of line. But what makes this car worth roughly ten times what a regular 993 Turbo goes for nowadays?

Well, two things typically determine the value of a collectible car. Awesomeness and rarity. The Porsche 911 GT2 Clubsport has them both. Fewer than 200 993 GT2s were ever built. And only about ten percent of them were fitted with the Clubsport package. Porsche wanted to compete with a turbocharged 911 in the FIA GT2 class. In order to do so they needed to build roadgoing variants to meet homologation criteria. And that is how the 911 GT2 Clubsport came to be.

The GT2 Clubsport started out as a 993 Turbo. Porsche then put it on a serious diet. The all-wheel drive system was ditched making this a rear-wheel drive machine. The interior was stripped, sound deadening removed, thinner glass for the windshield was used, the hood and doors were made of aluminum and so on. The result was a dramatic weight loss of over 440 pounds.

Now that the weight was down, it was time for the power to go up. Boost was cranked up and the power went up with it. These cars make about 425 horsepower. The GT2 Clubsport also got a modified suspension geometry and the bolt-on fender flares provided the room needed for the wider track. Wider lightweight 18-inch Speedline wheels were also part of the package. On the aerodynamic front, the car is fitted with a front splitter and a massive rear wing.

The Clubsport also was equipped with all the racing goodies that you would expect. This includes a welded roll cage, six-point racing harnesses, a battery cut-off switch, a full fire extinguishing system, and racing bucket seats. Simply put, this is a drool worthy Porsche 911.

Specific Example

Even a rough 993 911 GT2 Clubsport is going to bring big money, but this is far from a rough example. It is painted in Ferrari Yellow and while some Porsche fans may not like to see a Ferrari color on a Porsche, it looks fantastic on this car. This example has travelled less than 16,000 miles in the the last 28 years. You can only tell so much about a car from pictures, but it certainly presents itself well.

The sales ad doesn’t offer a lot of details about the specific history of the car. Although they do state that more information can be provided by request. If you are spending more than $2 million on a car, it is a good idea to find out as much about it as possible. But if you have the means and are looking to add the ultimate air-cooled 911 to your collection, this 911 GT2 Clubsport could be it.
