Immaculate 1979 930 Turbo

With the right options from the factory and a full engine and transmission rebuild, this 1979 930 is a delight to behold.

To many of us, a Porsche 930 is the quintessential Porsche sports car. It’s also the most recognizable to the public at large as the 911 Turbo. We came across this peach of a 1979 930 on ClassicCars.com and spent way longer pouring over the pictures than we should have at work.

The paperwork shows it’s optioned with an electric sunroof, leather sports seats, and the black headliner. Most importantly though, for driving grins, it also has Porsche factory limited slip differential. Modern aftermarket slip diffs may perform better, but on something as minty fresh as this, we appreciate the originality.

The engine may have new headers, but it also has a full rebuild. Along with the rebuilt four-speed, this Porsche 930 will have a long life ahead of it. The other modifications are purely for reliability and preservation. An upgraded timing belt tensioner and powder-coated engine fan are smart upgrades.

Inside the cabin it’s a glorious time capsule. The well preserved mix of functionality with exactly the right amount of luxury is pure Porsche DNA. The original tool kit and the carpet just add to that. The seats have a little wear, but nothing that gives away the cars age. Even the carpet looks equally well preserved.

Ian's obsession with cars started young and has left him stranded miles off-road in Land Rovers, being lost far from home in hot hatches, going sideways in rallycross cars, being propelled forward in supercars and, more sensibly, standing in fields staring at classic cars. His first job was as a mechanic, then he trained as a driving instructor before going into media production.

The automotive itch never left though, and he realized writing about cars is his true calling. However, that doesn’t stop Wright from also hosting the Both Hand Drive podcast.
