Porsche Panamera Sets New Record

Porsche's latest iteration of the Panamera has set a new benchmark at the Nurburgring, clocking in at an impressive 7:24.17 minutes. Piloted by professional driver Lars Kern, this record-breaking lap was 5.64 seconds faster than its predecessor, making the Panamera the fastest luxury-class sedan with either a combustion or hybrid powertrain.

The Secret to the Speed

While Porsche has not confirmed specific details about the "new Panamera top model," it is anticipated to be the upcoming Turbo S E-Hybrid trim. This variant is expected to produce more than the 670 hp of the regular Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid, potentially reaching up to 729 hp, powered by an electrified twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine.

Aerodynamic Enhancements

Visually, the new Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid stands out with a deeper front splitter and black trim accents. It features the optional Carbon Aerokit, which includes a gurney flap on the adaptive rear spoiler to enhance downforce. The pre-production prototype used for the record run was equipped with 21-inch center-locking rims and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, emphasizing its track-focused design.

Driver Insights

Lars Kern, who also set records with previous Panamera models in 2016 and 2020, noted significant improvements in the new generation's dynamic capabilities. He attributed the faster lap time to advancements in powertrain, aerodynamics, chassis, and the new Michelin tires. Kern emphasized the Panamera's unique blend of comfort and sportiness, transforming it into an "exclusive touring saloon with the handling of a sports car."

Competitive Edge

The new Panamera's lap time positions it ahead of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4Matic+ and slightly faster than the Tesla Model S Plaid, though it remains slower than the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT. This performance underscores Porsche's commitment to continuous development, showcasing the Panamera's evolution in speed and handling.

Market Offerings

In the U.S. market, the most powerful version of the 2024 Panamera is the Turbo E-Hybrid, starting at $191,000 and delivering 670 horsepower. Lesser models include the 4S E-Hybrid, Panamera 4, and the base model, with prices ranging from $102,800 to $126,800. Each variant combines luxury with performance, catering to a wide range of preferences and budgets.
