1. Smartphone Holder

Why allow that old cassette deck in your Porsche to go to waste when you can simply and conveniently construct a smartphone holder in its place using just two common household items:  A wire hanger and a few pieces of tape. This DIY holder can hang from the old deck without the need for an advanced-level modification to your actual dashboard. Simply bend the wire hanger so it wraps gently around your smartphone and coat the wire with several pieces of tape. Connect the "holder" to your cassette deck and presto: You've got a tape deck phone mount. Alternatively, you can attach the wire to an old cassette tape and fashion a phone mount like the one pictured.

2. Cassette Tape Adapter

Cassette tape adapters are designed to fit directly into your old tape deck slot and can be found online or in the automotive section of big box retail stores for approximately $10 (or less). This plug-and-play upgrade will allow you to step into the modern age without breaking the bank on an updated sound system. Use the adapter to easily and conveniently access files on any modern digital music player.

3. Cassette Receiver

Install a cassette receiver with a fold-down plate for easy access to your old cassette deck. Insert one of your old cassette tapes to turn on the receiver, which also functions as a CD player. Brands such as Pioneer, Clarion and Sony all manufacturer top rated cassette receivers of varying styles for $100 or less. This upgrade is ideal for Porsche owners who want a multi-functional in-dash unit that won't cost much (while also delivering high quality, powerful sound).

4. Connect an MP3 Player

Connect your old tape deck to an MP3 player for increased sound options during your daily commute. This simple DIY project requires only a few tools; although it is important to mention that a number of instructional guides online feature different methods and may or may not require use of the same common tools.

Generally speaking, you will need a soldering iron and a solder, a Phillips screwdriver, isolating tape, pliers and a pair of scissors. Once inside the tape deck, which you'll need to open before getting started, you'll need to ground each of the connections one by one directly to the circuit board using the required tools. The process is relatively easy, but does require soldering.

5. Air Freshener Clip

When all else fails, or you simply don't have the money to convert or connect your old tape deck into some really cool sound gadget, use the slot to hold a $2 car freshener clip that you see online or at Walmart. Attach the car freshener clip directly to the slot and enjoy weeks of fresher smelling air while you drive.
