The Porsche 993 - An Amazing Choice

The 993 is an amazing choice for a driver to have the privilege of piloting. Many owners have a list of modifications they have done to update the car for the better. Whether you are in the market for a 993 or already own a bone stock one and wish to usher it into present automotive conditions, this article is for you.

1. Suspension

Bilstein M030 springs and M030 front and rear sways with Bilstein HD shocks, or Bilstein PSS-9's with upgraded sway bars, are the general consensus from owners with modified 993s. The ride overall will be stiffer, but the street ride will still be great. The biggest difference over stock is that the understeer will have been neutralized. The M030 bars are much more neutral and will allow you to rotate the car easily. The tendency to plow into corners under aggressive turn-in will be greatly reduced. This setup is a great compromise for the occasional track day driver; great street ride, but plenty of fun at the track.

2. New Wheels

18" lightweight wheels are another one that owners have endorsed in the forum to add some pizzazz and increase the handling on the 993. If you're curious about factory wheel weights and would like to have some numbers on hand when shopping for new wheels, then use this list. If you are thinking of picking up a set of Porsche wheels from another model, then use this handy dandy picture to make sure those wheels are the real deal.

3. New Headlight Bulbs

Upgrading to a HID xenon kit is necessary for those who wish to daily drive their car or know they will be doing a good amount of night driving when they do take it out. I recommend the HID Xenon H1 headlight conversion by Catz. The new headlights will offer high and low beam function, won't blind oncoming drivers, and have a clear cut-off line. Bringing the headlights up to standards will not only look really nice but will also be an upgraded safety measure for increased visibility.

4. Kits for Smoother Shifting

The term "RS Clutch and LWF" is used to describe several different clutch options, and it's not always clear what you're getting with the kit. Mostly, the differences are the clutch disk itself or the pressure plate.  The kit from FD Motorsports is the one you should look for as it has a clutch disk from the 996 GT3 in it.

5. New Mufflers

If you're the type that would like to have a great sound coming from your Porsche when winding it out (and who wouldn't?), then I'd recommend the RSR mufflers for the exhaust system. They are fine for the street and aren't too loud for general purposes. There is nice low frequency gurgling with some pops on deceleration that will make you giddy when driving. It's a great mod that will thrill you around town but not be too obnoxious to the neighbors. The mufflers are also great as they won't take away from the looks of the car and will appear to be stock.
