5 Coolest Cars in Porsche's Private Collection

Porsche has made so many awesome and rare models over the years that it can be hard to narrow them down and pick favorites. These are the five cars the legendary automaker has chosen as standouts to display in their private collection.

1. 1992 Porsche 964 Turbo S "Leichtbau"

The 964 Turbo S "Leichtbau" or "Light Build" was a limited production variant of the 964 Turbo S that began as a design study. Public reaction to the car prompted Porsche to build 86 of this very special lightweight car. The regular Turbo's 3.3 liter air cooled flat six was modified to produce 381 horsepower, a substantial boost over the Turbo's 320. Weight saving measures (nearly 400lbs) include the use of carbon fiber and the removal of anything not required to go fast - no power windows or air conditioning here. Together, those improvements made the 964 Turbo Lightweight one of the fastest cars of it's time.

2. 1981 Porsche 924 Carrera GTS

Back in the early 80's, Porsche needed to homologate a race car to meet Group 4 racing regulations. So they built the special 924 Carrera GT, a tweaked 924 Turbo with more aggressive bodywork. The GTS employed greater boost to produce even more power than the GT, and featured fixed headlights in place of the 924's typical popups. About 50 924 Carrera GTS's were produced, making it one of the rarer special edition Porsches ever made.

3. 1998 Porsche 911 GT1

A real race car for the street, the 911 GT1 was legally capable of both running the 24 Hours of LeMans and driving home afterwards. A total of 21 were built with a lofty price tag north of $800,000, which is a lot of money now, and was even more back in 1998. The mid mounted twin turbo flat six produced nearly 600 horsepower, which was a handful in a car that weight a mere 2,300 pounds.

4. 1984 Porsche 911 SC/RS

A total of 20 911 SC/RS's were built in 1984, all exclusively for rally racing. A steep for the time price tag of $72,000 nabbed you a 911 that weight only 2,160 pounds - a whopping 1,000 pounds less than the roadgoing SC. The SC/RS also received a host of engine upgrades that pushed power to 290, good enough to make it the fastest production Porsche street car ever made up to that time.

5. 1952 Porsche 356 America Roadster

The America Roadster was a lightweight version of the already light 356 roadster, all 21 of which were fittingly sold in America. Weighing in at a svelte 1,334 pounds, they were used extensively for sports car racing in the states. The America Roadster's air cooled flat four only produced 70 horsepower, but it's light weight made it an impressive performer in it's day.
