5 Best Sounding Porches Ever Made

According to Porsche and fans of the brand, these five models produce the sweetest sounding exhaust notes. Surprisingly, not all of them are flat sixes!

1. 1973-74 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7

A true race car for the street, the 1973-74 Porsche 911 Carrera GT 2.7 also produced some seriously sweet exhaust notes. The mechanically fuel injected engine only produced modest-by-today's standards power (210hp at 6,300 rpm and 188 lb-ft of torque at 5,100 rpm), but at the time it was the quickest production 911 to date, a crown it wore until the late 80's. Hear one being driven in anger and one thing's for sure - nothing sounds quite like it.

2. 1953-56 Porsche 550 Spyder

Like the Carrera RS 2.7, the 550 Spyder also has a unique sound. With a classic air cooled four cylinder engine utilizing four camshafts, this was an engine and a car ahead of its time. Power was once again modest, with a factory rating of only 110 hp, but it was incredibly light with just 1,300 pounds worth of car to push around. The result was a top speed of 140 mph, legendary handling on or off the track, and one incredibly sweet exhaust note.

3. 2006-11 Porsche 911 GT3 RS

The 911 GT3 RS is a true fan favorite, and its naturally aspirated, 500 hp flat six is a big part of the reason why. Revving to just shy of 9,000 rpm, the 4.0 liter sounds simply incredible. This is a car and an engine that you want to push to the limits, and your rewards for doing s o are intoxicating noises that few other cars can match.

4. 2013-15 Porsche 918 Spyder

It may have a 4.6 liter V8 in place of the standard Porsche flat six, but the 918 Spyder is an obvious choice for this list. Instead of frantic, urgent noises coming from the tailpipe, the Spyder produces a more mellow tone that turns into an angry bellow with a mere stab of the throttle. At full throttle, with the exhaust opened, there won't be a person within a country mile who isn't treated to those sweet sounds.

5. 2003-07 Porsche Carrera GT

The Carrera GT, with its screaming 5.7 liter V10, is obviously the top choice here. When you rev it, you'll hear nothing but the crackles and pops a racing bred engine can produce. With the throttle wide opened, you'll be rewarded with noises that are typically only found on a Formula 1 track in the early 21st century V10 era.
