This article applies to the Porsche 911 (997) (2005-2012).

There are times when the dealership's professional automotive service is the best option for car maintenance. But for simple things like oil changes, a car owner may choose the DIY method. This article will prepare you to perform some DIY maintenance as having access to underneath the car is required for certain services.

Materials Needed

  • Two low-profile hydraulic floor jacks
  • Four jack stands

Step 1 – Locate right rear jack point, place first floor jack under it, and lift to appropriate level

The suspension is stiff enough on the 997 that when you jack the rear jacking point, the front wheel on the same side will eventually come up with it. So if you hoist the right rear end high enough, you will have clearance for the jack stand to slot under the front jacking point. Set the car on the jack stand and make sure it is secure.

Step 2 – Place second floor jack under right rear and lift to appropriate level

Keep the first floor jack on right rear in place, and place the second floor jack underneath the right rear. At this point, you should have a floor jack on both sides in the rear of the vehicle and a jack stand in the front left.

Step 3 – Place the second jack stand under the right rear

Working at the right rear, place the second jack stand underneath.

Step 4 – Lower floor jack, and move to left rear corner jacking point

Begin jacking the car up slowly from the left rear corner. Listen and feel for any movement from the right side jack stands, just in case. The chassis is stiff enough that with the other side in the air, jacking from the left rear corner will hoist the left front corner. Place a jack stand under the left front corner.

Step 5 – Use second jack under the left rear alternative jacking point

Following the same methodology as the right side, by using the alternative jack point, you can now remove the first jack from the left rear corner and place a stand there. Once the jack stand is secure, lower the jack off the alternative jacking point, and the vehicle should be seated on all four jack stands.

When it is time to drop the car off the stands, work in the reverse order of the steps presented.

  • Jack the car up on the left rear alternative jacking point and remove the left rear jack stand.
  • Place your jack at the left rear jack stand location and lift the car high enough to remove the left front stand, then lower the car.
  • Jack the car up on the right rear alternative jacking point and remove the right rear jack stand.
  • Place your jack at the right rear jack stand location and lift the car high enough to remove the right front stand, then lower the car.
