Default Solar Trailer Battery Charger

Just installed a solar panel from Battery Tender on the roof of my trailer. My winch battery would die ever 4-5 weeks from my tracker drawing current. Problem solved.

I did that on my previous trailer. Worked like a charm. Haven't got around to it on my new trailer, even though I've had it a couple of years. Might be the motivation I need.

Very trick. Out of curiosity, are they designed to be mounted exposed to the elements like that? Wonder if a rainy day would cause issues.

I know we have a couple of options offered by different manufacturers that are designed to be permanently mounted on a roof, hadn't seen the Battery Tender brand one yet.

Mine came with mounting hardware if I recall correctly. Has 4 screw holes in the corners and I never had a problem for 2 years til I sold the trailer. I was worried about a leak if I ran the wire through the roof, so I ran it over the edge and entered the trailer on the front V nose. Not sure it was a valid concern, but it worked out.

Yes - this is designed to be mounted permanently outside with the cabeling sealed to prevent water intrusion. I sealed the mounting and cable holes in the trailer with sealant. I will leave it on until it breaks and will then report back.

had one on my last trailer.

Would store the rig in florida for months and the trailer batteries were always ready to go.

Great idea, also allowed me to jump start truck, if necessary.

Where does it connect to? Directly to the battery? I have a charge controller thing already in the trailer that works off of 110V. How would it work with that?

It's a simple connection to the battery with a fuse in between. The charging controller is attached directly to the solar panel so it's plug and play.

I have the same panel sitting in my garage since last year waiting to do this same job. Thanks for being the test subject - now I don't have an excuse!

When my trailer is in my driveway I keep it plugged into power and there is a battery tender on board keeping everything up to date. If there is no race car in the trailer it also doubles as a place to smoke cigars on rainy nights!
