Educate me about SPB engines
How much does a junkyard engine go for?
How many levels of rebuild/refresh to a junkyard engine are there and how much do they cost?
How long does a typical engine last?
Do most SPB racers just drive old engines (not rebuilt/refreshed) and just put in another old engine once the old old one dies?
Thx much!

1) 2-4k depending on local supply and luck.
2) If you rebuild a used engine the parts costs are highly variable based on if you need a new IMS (pitted bearing surface), new crank (pitted bearing surface), and/or new cases if cylinder walls ovalized by > 2/1000. New piston rings are pricey too. And on and on. A full rebuild is often a 6-8k endeavor.
3) I typically would get 75 hours out of a motor, some more, some less.
4) Yes, most people put a junkyard motor in and do the following: new coils, new plugs, some sort of IMS upgrade, oil and filter change after one use, then go at it.

We went the built motor route just to be safe, and found zero performance gains in doing so (built 100% to factory specs).
We just picked up a 42k mile donor and we will be using that motor, with a few new bolt on parts for reliability, in 2017.
Rebuilt motor - up to $10k depending on how far you go.
Used low mile motor - $3500 plus some light upgrades.
