Default GT4 RS in the works? Rumors of a 4.0...

Saw this on the GT3 forum. Sounds legit?

Autocar: Detuned 4.0 because, "So fast is the current four-cylinder Cayman S that Porsche officials privately concede that, if shod with an equivalent tyre, it would be as quick around the Nürburgring as the existing Cayman GT4, so a big performance leap is expected."

Autoexpress: "However, our sources are saying that the GT4 might instead gain the RS badge, as well as a 4.0-litre engine."

I've been firmly in the "never" camp for the GT4-RS. That said, they could just call it GT4 and stick a detuned 4.0 in there. It's not impossible to believe.

Only thing is that putting a true GT engine would really make the cost of the GT4 much greater - I would have to think well into the 130s when optioned out.

a 4.0 gt4 will eat everything on the track even it's big brother the gt3 and the gt3rs.. I don't know if porsche is willing to do that? But they do have a dilemma, if they stick to the current 3.8 and add what 20hp? the 718 S with tune and tires will destroy it around the track.

Had a little chat with the local dealer principal.....these are rumors but they are starting to sound a bit more real...expect a nice price increase. But we will see, couple of years before this is available.

The current 718 S with a tune, downpipe and filters can make up to 450 PS........now that's a problem!

does the cooling take a hit with the increase in power? Increasing boost and power on a turbo motor increases heat related issues at the track significantly based on experience and also watching others cut their sessions short. Cheap power isn't what it's always made out to be but curious if this this the same with the 718 motors.

there is no way they would put a 4.0 in as there are plenty of ways to get more power out of current engine.

the only reason to put a 4.0 in is if they can use the same engine from gt3 and detune it dramatically.. so they would need to keep building only one NA engine..

their might be a question of fitting as the current one is already super tight

Probably....saw just dyno number from Ehresmann which have been accurate from the past. The GT4 still has a huge advantage in the chassis area so the advantage would be limited to straight line performance and probably daily use with better low end torque..

718 GTS (whenever it arrives) will be very high performing. If they want to stick to their NA mandate and meaningfully separate the GT4 from the GTS, it's going to need some firepower.

If you want a 4.0 GT4 just send your car to Jake Raby.

If you look at what Porsche (and Apple, etc.) has done since the beginning of time is add very incremental improvement with each model leaving margin for the next model. Like adding 20hp. That's what Porsche does.

Anyone thinking the next GT4 will be much more than 405-415hp needs to revisit Porsche model history. So, then how do they achieve say 415hp?

A slightly juiced normal 3.8, slightly juiced 2.5 turbo 4, a massively detuned GT3 based 3.8/4.0, or the new 3.0L TT engine in the new Carreras, OR a tweaked NA version of the new 3.0 flat six.

My prediction is a derivative of the 3.0 motor either with or without snails. It's a sweet engine for sure and I'd like to know what Porsche could do with a high revving NA version. Or heck, I'll take the TT as I LOVED it in the Carrera S I recently drove. Thrust basically all over the tachometer which would be a nice change of pace from the flat feeling under 5k rpm current 3.8 in our GT4's.

The 'collectors' and speculators are sweating bullets and wringing their hands now. Lol

Anyone still think the next car will be turbo? Yes, these articles are never totally accurate, but they do point things in the right direction
