Default Turbo exhaust options

Very happy with my GTS but I have this sickness which tells me to trade into something different every 2 or 3 years. The 991 does exactly nothing for me so looking at 997.2 Turbos as a possibility. Drove one yesterday and I knew the exhaust note would be quiet compared to what I'm used to but I have to say it was even quieter that expected. What are the options of waking it up and will it ever compare to what I have now? The PSE with bypass pipes where the center muffler used to be is just nasty but in a good way and not obnoxiously loud.

From reading here it will never sound like a N/A porsche.

Here is my experience. I have a 997.1. They are regarded as louder than what you drove. I got a kline with 200 cell cats. It is louder than stock but it just sounds like more air moving to me. I have heard it from outside and it is much louder. Inside the cabin with the windows down it is just loud vacuum cleaner. There is no exhaust "note" imo.

To sum it up. Louder yes. Pleasing note no. And it will never sound like a gts, gt3, gt4.

We have a great solution for the 997.2TT - The 997.2TT is a very quiet car from the factory, however, our full 3" X-Pipe system with dual 3" tips really wakes it up...this one is catless, plenty of good sounds now.

Here is what the owner of the video emailed: I'm a grown up man in my early 30's. But I'm jumping around in my car and smiling silly! John, the car sounds sick! I mean, it growls, barks, screams, ..... and ..........too lol

You guys created the perfect sound note for the 997.2TT... I'm not sure anyone can match it! I've heard louder setups... I've heard more quite setups .... but the note of music is something else.. every time I floor it I grin

Feel free to add it to the testimonials on your website, lol... may be clean it up a little.

The .2Turbos are quiet to begin with. Adding an exhaust with 200 Cell Cats will make it sound louder and better depending on the various designs that are out there. Kline, Speedtech, Europipe are some of the favorites thus far. I have the Inconel Kline Exhaust with 200 Cell Cats and SS Headers. It sounds better than the OEM and with the Kline exhaust tips, it has a nice wail at the upper rpm somewhat reminiscent of a GT3 or GTS. If you're in love with how your GTS sounds like now, you may be somewhat disappointed with the sound of the Turbo cars, even with aftermarket exhausts, IMO. I don't think the aftermarket exhausts for the Turbo can mimic the N/A engine note that we all love. Kline has an Inconel exhaust for the N/A 911 and if you hear that one, man it sounds really nice. Unfortunately, my .2Turbo S Inconel exhaust can't compare to that.

I have a Speedtech catted version with stock tips on my 997.1. I didn't want any hint of drone, and this system as configured has none.
Will never sound as good as a N/A but the torque makes up for it

sandwedge,
I've been looking for an exhaust system for months now and SpeedTech might be it. They're local to me so I wanted to check out their shop and chat with them about various exhaust options. I'm thinking SpeedTech 100cell\X-Pipe\2.5" version which might be the best happy medium however, I'm worried about drone.

I am also considering Unobtanium custom from Canada.

saabin,
What do you have for SpeedTech and how much do you like it?

Regards,

Dmitriy

I have personal experience with this as I came from an NA 997.2 with a Tubi exhaust to a 997.1TT with stock exhaust. It has been... quiet to say the least. I really miss the sound of my old car. I actually have a Fabspeed exhaust in my garage that I haven't bothered to install yet, but the only thing I really wanted to upgrade with my car was the exhaust system, if for no other reason than the sound. My last 3 sports cars have all had some form of aftermarket exhaust system on them, and for me, sound is one of those things that just completes the package.

By the way, I found this clip helpful in at least hearing what some different exhaust notes sound like (though nothing can replace hearing them in person):

So are you going to install it? I'd like to change my exhaust, but in the past Iv'e spent far to much on Porsche exhausts, and they're pretty much a waste of money for a Turbo IMO. Nothing can sound like an NA at WOT.

If a new exhaust system on a Turbo made this sound I'd be in for sure.

Europipe muffler on my 997.1TT. It is what it should have sounded like from the factory.

Thanks to all who responded. Some of the You Tube clips sound pretty good to my ears but the consensus still seems to be that a turbo will never sound close to a NA car, no matter how much money is spent. Not a deal breaker for me but good to know.

I've been considering an Unobtanium, Kline or Speedtech exhaust for my car for longer than I care to admit. Now that I've sorted all the mechanical issues I'm thinking to make a commitment and finally purchase one. Keen to waste some money and share shipping costs?

^just do it, definately worth it and makes the car much more enjoyable.

I was looking for an exhaust for my 997.1 turbo from day 1. I get it, porsches aim to make the turbo the grand tourer for daily driving, but they made the exhaust way too tame.

I had a europipe for a few years but I don't want to drive without TüV anymore and changed to kline very recently, which I can drive legally now in Switzerland. Both are great exhausts. I'll post a review and comparison soon, after a few hundred km.
