Default Truck shopping

Looking for an extra vehicle for winter use so I don't subject my GT4 to salt and potholes here in the Northeast. I've run my other cars in the winter before with proper winter tires, but I just can't do that to this car.

Was thinking of maybe a full-size pickup since it would provide good utility in the other seasons as well (and if I ever make the leap to towing to the track, I'd be all set). 2016 F150 XLT 4x4 V8 with tow package vs Chevy Silverado 1500 4x4. There may be some good deals on leftover 2016 inventory on dealer lots.

Any opinions or suggestions?

Why not check out a Tundra? I'd personally trust its towing capacity more than the other trucks you listed...

Source: I'm one of the Toyota engineers that helped design and benchmark the tundra hitch vs. f-150, Silverado, and ram.

I had an F150 and after a few years of towing well within the rated loads, the transmission started acting up. Can't speak for the Chevy.

3/4 ton is the better buy over the 1/2 ton..roughly the same price ..just stronger in many ways. I have 285K miles on my 2003 Silverado 2500 with at least 120K tow miles..No problems with engine or trans.

Just bought a 2010 F350 with 31k miles on it. Towed my enclosed trailer to Summit Point and back like it wasn't even there.

In my opinion, if you want to tow buy a diesel. The torque is incredible.

Pretty much any full-size truck on the market can fill your needs. They are all over-engineered for the average person who wants it for bad weather or to tow a light car once in a while.

While my knee jerk reaction is Ford F-150, if you don't care about brand loyalty, Ram (formerly Dodge Ram) is having such a hard time selling their trucks that the FACTORY is advertising 20% off MSRP BEFORE the dealer discounts!

You could probably get a ridiculously low price on one. Even if you don't buy new, this type of deal on new ones has got to crush the used Ram truck market as well.

I have owned a Nissan Titan for 9 years now. It was a good price point - bought my last one 10/2015. I like it better than the Toyota/ford/chevy equiv, With the tow package and the PRO4x version, you get ~9500lbs of towing capacity.

I just bought the new Titan XD. Towed my enclosed ATC to Canada, the Glen and Summit Point. So much better than my F150, and better gas mileage too. Love it so far.

If it's a pickup and you plan to tow, diesel is mandatory (well, extremely desirable). Unfortunately I also need an SUV (skiing in VT a lot) and SUV's are no longer available with diesel. So I went with Ford Expedition EL with the Ecoboost. They say that's the best SUV to tow with (at least 2017 models)

Go with the F150. Ford is the #1 selling truck for a reason.

I have the Infiniti QX56 which I believe has the same frame and engine as the Titan.

You can tow just fine with an open trailer, as I did for a bunch of years, but if have an enclosed trailer it is not a good idea.

Once I went to an enclosed trailer I went through a couple of transmissions. That's when I bought the F350 diesel. Installing a plow this winter and plan on keeping it for the next few hundred thousand miles!

I like the part where OP pretends he isn't going to be towing in the immediate future for the foreseeable future. "Oh, you know, maybe a truck, juuuuust in case, totally speculating here, that maybe some day I maybe might want to tow, but probably not, you know, but maybe, I guess I might."

The comments about going 3/4 ton are worthwhile. I drive a Ram 2500 Diesel which I love.
However, these 3/4 trucks are much bigger than the 1/2 ton so things like most parking garages and tight parking lots become a problem.

Some of us are used to putting big things in small places!
