LGENDS AT LCMT 2015 -1
Last Saturday I attended the Legends event at LCMT.
I had been there two years ago, and the array of vintage racers was mind-boggling.
This time there were fewer cars, but I was still in techno heaven.
As before, my favourite was the Audi LMP car, the last of the gas engined, (pre Turbo diesel).
WHAT A MACHINE!
Almost every part is CNC machined, hand-layer up CF, or some exotic casting/forging.
The wheel uprights would make magnificent vases.
The CNC machined bell-cranks could be jewelry.
There are so many ingenious parts employed, so many solutions solved.
These engines are very sturdy...endurance engines. Ceramic bearings where ever possible, over built.
Apparently, when this series of cars became obsolete, Audi sold all parts and cars to privateers. Some of the Audi employees who created the works cars, became suppliers and service centres for the approx 10-15 cars sold.
The F1 cars, using Cosworth engines were different beasts. 15 hour engines, maybe a bit more if lower RPM is used.
Walking around the pits was exactly like our sessions.
Guys speaking candidly about their cars, technical issues, the costs involved, the compromises made etc.
Though the $$$ factor was different, the enthusiasm factor was the same. Certainly boats and sport planes are of a different $$ magnitude, but it is all about passion.
I heard a neat expression yesterday.
" The cure for motor sport OCD is....poverty!"
Life is relative!

Joe,
If you want to see more historically significant Porsches at one time, in one place in the paddock and on the track you owe it to yourself to go to Rennsport Reunion V at Laguna Seca in September.

Yes, it's that good. I've been to the first 4 and wouldn't miss this one.

Ditto - attended III and IV at Daytona and Laguna Seca respectively. Booked for RRV in September - it's ridiculous.
These come around every 3-5 years, not to be missed.

I booked a few moths back and was really lucky (and a little persuasive) to be able to secure a room at the Holiday Inn in Monterey.
Lots of local hotels are booked way in advance....you might look into Chris's solution in renting a house at this juncture if you have some friends joining you.
