Default Drive Axle Failure? HELP!

Greetings Rennlist. I am a first time owner of a 85.5 Porsche 944. The car has 60,000 original miles and only 5,000 miles put on the car in the last 15 years. No leaks noticed on the car after purchasing. A few days ago I noticed an oil leak coming from the drive axle (rearend). I assumed it was going to need new seals. My son was driving the car a day after noticing the leak and we had a catastrophic failure. While driving he heard a loud bang from the back, followed by a series of smaller bangs. The car coasted to a stop with no power getting to the rear wheels. Its now dead in a parking lot waiting to get towed to the shop. Assuming it has something to do with rear end/ drive axle, but have not seen anyone else talk about this failure on the net. Any ideas?......This sucks! Thanks!
