In most cases only a handful of HEX tables are decoded and often times are mislabeled (both by name and scale) making the tunability of the system almost non-existent.
Don't even get me started on flash times and flash procedures.
The only way Kess has any real value is if you get connected with someone like Viezu who can sell you "tunes" for $100 because thinking that this system will enable you to tune on the fly or fine tune anything couldn't be farther from the truth.
If you actually want to tune a car from scratch, you had better set aside a week on the dyno with Kess.
All of the opposite is true for Cobb. Period.

I know you want to get into this as a hobby, but what does that actually mean to you?
Why do you need a system that enables access to a number of different cars?
In my opinion, the best thing to do if you want to get into tuning is to NOT start with a system than let's you manipulate OEM hardware, but get a aftermarket ECU that has good software and real-time tuning, install it on your personal vehicle and just go drive. Your ability to learn in this environment will be so much greater from a support standpoint, a usability standpoint, a cause-effect feedback loop standpoint, a convenience standpoint, and likely a cost standpoint.

...so I have a tool that can work on different cars, Cobb is very specialized and only support certain models, none of which I own. Can you recommend an aftermarket ECU that has good software and real-time tuning?

Expect to pay a few grand for any of the following systems but all do what they say they can do (which is not always the case for some aftermarket ECUs)
- Haltech (Platinum Pro or Elite)
- AEM (Infinity or Series II)
- Link / VIPEC
Also, if you want to get some more structured learning on the subject, check out efi101.com and/or High Performance Academy. I did all of their courses about a decade ago but would only imagine they've gotten better. Both places are good for foundational knowledge.
