Is McLaren overtaking Porsche?...
Just noticed that the next gen McLaren will be announced on Geneva March 7.

Seems to me that they are becoming formidable at the pointy end of the range where the GT3, the RS,and the Porsche Turbo live.
In one way it is good for Porsche to get some heady competition ( the AMG car is also potent), but I wonder if we are reading the end of the ability to stay rear-engined and we will see the ending move forward in the 992 for instance, as it already has in the RSR.....

Mclaren is a formidable competitor for all the European sports car manufacturers
at multiple price points. Fortunately of late Porsche executives have realized that some people still enjoy 3 pedals, that may be their new niche...
If you look at Porsches sales by category, the SUV sales outpace the sports cars by a huge margin.

I agree of course re SUVs, but traditionally the edgy Porsches would tend to win comparos with more expensive cars in terms of performance. I think we are coming to the end of those cars punching above their weight. Will be interesting to see how the 992 redesign will advance the case…...

I think its just the end of the flat 6 being able to keep up to manufactures that make easy hp by adding more larger cylinders and then adding turbos to it.

The advantage the Mclarens have is the variable hydraulic suspension, so in essence its 2 cars in one. I drove the 12C on the street and track, and it was brilliant on both. Porsches at least 997 iteration have a far superior feedback in the steering wheel, 991 not so much, IMHO.
That is not a bad thing, esp wrt sound. Merc V8 in the morning is just brilliant!

Not to add insult to injury... but the new Mercedes AMG GT R will make minced meat out of a GT3RS at less than two thirds of the price, and it has enough creature comforts that it also makes a much beter DD. Porsche needs to up their game in short order.

The only thing with McLaren is reliability. Astonishing cars to drive, but do not have a good record for reliability. A friend of mine has a 12C and its been in the shop more than hes driven it.

They announced in August that the 960 was shelved until 2026 but with the full $ impact of the Diesel scam coming to light I would not be surprised if it gets axed. It was a nice to have vs must have.

Chris Harris made this point with GT3's hitting Mclaren money.
