Default Head Light Covers/Rings - Can someone please explain

What are these covers/rings around the headlights all about on this 2004?? Appreciate they are attempting to give a more updated look, but do they fit well?

Anyone seen them in person?

Curious...

A very poor attempt to hide the 996 "fried egg yolk" headlights by trying to make them look like 997 headlights.

I can't recall seeing these up close before, but fwiw I've always liked the fried egg 996.2 lights, no need to cover them up.

^ agreed, stick with OEM. Much better looking than that extra plastic flap.

It can't fit well since the headlights are flush with the bodywork.

Not a fan myself, but to each his own. As for fit, I guess it all comes down to how there made and what you consider a good fit. The headlights sit flush with the surrounding bodywork so anything you stick on will be raised.

There are a few out there where the glass is painted to look like that. Still looks like shyte to me but whatever...
This is specific to the 2003-2005 911.
I'm surprised an aftermarket company hasn't offered a facelift for the 996.

Why cover up the nicest headlights ever for a 911.

I believe these cars especially ones with Mezger engine will be very sought after, and the headlights will be appreciated as most rare features on Porsches are.
I have also seen stickers that make the headlights round but I prefer the original.

I would think those particular covers would be unsafe and illegal, as they cover up the turn signal.

Here's another angle that shows how much they raise the profile:

I really dislike the fried egg lights, but these covers are even worse, IMO.

I guess I like the concept if you hate the fried egg headlight. But losing the turn signals?
I know Benz drivers never use them, but I need them.

maybe it is a smoked plastic that allows the light to be seen through it.

Supply dramatically outstrips demand for these cars Danny and they continue to depreciate according to Excellence, Hagerty, etc. market reports. Hi production numbers and those unloved headlights will continue to make the 996 Mezger engines the best sports car bargain around. In addition to the IMS, cylinder scoring, headlight and slab side design flaws, the non-Mezgers destiny will continue to be the cheapest 911's ever made. A great option if you don't want to sink the extra money into a much better looking 997 or of course any air kooler.

I have seen the style with the cutout for the turns and the washer nozzle. It didn't look TOO bad - much better than the top pick IMO (which looks like someone painted cardboard and stuck it over the light). The pick below is similar to the ones I have seen:
