Does anyone have any experience with one of these? I'm wondering if you still need to shift it given that it has gates for L, D and Ds (or D1?).
I'm not interested in buying it, just curious.

have never driven a Sportomatic 911 but would like to...
4 speed manual trans with torque converter and clutch...touch the shifter and the clutch disengages, release the shifter and clutch engages...torque converter to allow sitting/idling in gear...
ahead of its time but didn't make a ton of sense...

Glad you posted as I am curious how it works as well.

Could it be that this is just a manual shifter installed over the automatic one to make it look like a manual? The 928 guys do this a lot to make their autos look manual./

It's a Sportomatic alright. Only 2 pedal visible.
Not that you should anyway, but you definitely can't rest your hand on the gear shift.
Here's an article explaining it.

Does it matter? I never buy without a PPI. This does seem to invite difficult maintenance issues though...
