What's stopping someone from going out and buying one of these cars in order to cash in?

Did owners have to be owners prior to the 2015 date?

Only reason I'm asking is that it would be smart to buy one, trade it in, receive that credit plus the compensation on a new VW (say a Golf R...)

Nevermind...answered my own question:

How do you know if there even is an approved modification that complies? if there isn't then what will they do, block you from license plate renewal? I assume the ministry will determine non renewal by VIN and not emissions testing so that it can remove all violating vehicles,

If you purchased your vehicle after September 18, 2015 and are the current owner, you may be eligible to choose:

Approved Emissions Modification. Keep your vehicle AND receive an extended emissions warranty AND Cash Payment. This option is only available if a modification is approved by regulators.

The way the deal reads it's very advantageous for owners to trade in to a VW product and get the cash on top of a the trade in. Not a bad deal at all. My friend has a 2010 Golf TDI, top of the line all leather, 6 speed, only 90K on it. He wants to sell it to me, I want to buy it from him, but realistically I can't compete with VW.

So what do they do with the cars that get traded in? Sounds like an opportunity for a great deal (in a province like NS with no emission testing....yet).

I didn't wade through the whole FAQ download at the vwsettlement dot ca website, but reading an article on driving.ca by David Booth, he seems to think that VW owners will be happy.

I am waiting to see what they are going to do about my wife's 2011 q7 TDI. looking at the audi Canada website, it leads me to believe that they are going to scrap/buyback the '09-12 3.0L TDI models....

Shame, it is a nice vehicle.

I'm going to try to keep my 2006 'legally dirty -then made a touch dirtier' Jetta TDI running as long as possible. I do really like it as far as a 10 yr old DD goes...

I'm one of the affected owners. 2013 Highline golf wagon TDI. Only big benefit that I can see is the $5500 cash I'll receive. I didn't buy the car to trade in after 4 years. I keep my cars for 10 years and we like the car as is. I think we just get Canadian Black Book value (whole sale). They do consider mileage in the value as well. Ours has 58000klms.

I thought they take the mileage when the scandal started into consideration not the mileage you have today.

Haven't seen anything official on what "the fix" is going to be yet.

Nope. The more we use the car the less we get.

Are you 100% sure of this? Remember reading (didn't pay much attention since mine are '05 & '06) on the TDI forum that the value of the car is based on the time when the $hit hit the fan.

There are also people who bought the TDI thinking they are saving the world. (not me lol)

My sister is going to sell hers back and buy some type of green car.

Yes I'm sure. Value as of Sept 2015 based on model, trim, transmission etc. Then adjusted based on mileage. I get it. Ours is low km's. Wouldn't be fair if someone else's had 300000km and got the same buyback amount as me. What really pisses me off is we get the whole sale value. I paid retail and should be paid retail if we chose to not trade the car in but just sell it back.

What's the update on Porsche being investigated for cheating on its gasoline cars as reported in December? That's gone quiet...
