Default 996 turbo transmission rebuild

Hi Folks,
Anyone know of a good shop in Toronto that can rebuild the transmission for my '03 996 turbo? Looks like the gear selector shaft for 1-2 has significant play causing the tranny not to want to go into 1st gear half the time. My mechanic says the shaft needs to be replaced and possibly the synchro. Not sure if it would be better/easier to have my mechanic re and re the tranny and then have it sent to a shop or if there is a shop that can do the re and re as well as the tranny work itself.

Thanks in advance.

also, is it hard to 'find' the gear or it is just hard to engage?...has the clutch been bled, and/or checked for clutch component failure?

Thanks Rob for the suggestions. My mechanic actually disconnected the shifter cables and tried to engage directly from the rod while the car was on the lift and an assistant was depressing the clutch and the same behaviour happened.

I just changed the accumulator and the slave was checked out fine (he had me do this to rule that out first). It's not hard to 'find' the gear I think, it just feels blocked but I'm not really sure. Every once in awhile it will feel like it goes in, but when I let out the clutch, it starts grinding and kicks out, indicating that it was never engaged to begin with. Other times it clearly feels like it won't go in.

I would make sure the cables were readjusted correctly using the correct bridge tool for the shifter you have...there are many versions.
But it could very well be an internal issue too.

Old engine mounts can cause hard time shifting too.

How many KM? I thought these were very robust transmissions.

I do not know 996 T cars at all... but this does sound interesting. I would suspect a transmission re-build is a rare thing on these cars. Please keep us posted on the repair and results.

I would think any of the indy's or dealerships could do this.

I would trust AutoSelect in Newmarket. One thing I like about these guys is that they do not take on jobs that are over their heads and they reach out for help immediately. They have enough connection and contacts to either get the job done right, or tell you who you should go see. They have a handful of customers with 996 Turbos as well...
