I can`t believe you didn't bring your car here. Way less hassle than going through the bs of buying another used car here. Just saying ....

most major banks offer insurance, also many brokers one could use, there's also a few insurance quote webpages, such as insurancehotline.com.

I had TD, RBC and Desjardins quote me compared to what my broker offers. Needless to say I stayed with my broker because the "banks" were in the stratosphere with rates. I've had two not at fault claims in the last 3 years, one of which was a total loss yet my rates with my broker have stayed the same

IMO, the best advice there is for insurance...shop for yourself.
Always amazed by the variances persons vs company vs cost.
I left broker as dealing with TD directly was A LOT cheaper(and easier), for me. I've had two not-at-faults(and completely unavoidable--idiots! my beater bmw's are targets, lol) in the last year or so, and no cost increases at all, actually went down about 14% at my renewal this month(maybe an Onterrible vs Quebekistan issue)

Agreed on doing your homework and calling around. Are you a professional as in CA, PEng, Lawyer etc? If yes check their insurance affiliations first, we saved a significant amount on our insurance premiums when we switched to the CBIA program (Cdn Bar Insurance Association) my wife has access to.

Just for kicks, I priced out auto insurance for a 2006 Porsche Cayenne and a 2009 VW Rabbit with comprehensive and collision - both ended up being $2500. No faults, no accidents, and full license.

What the heck!

Since you are outraged at the price please tell us what you think the premium should be and how you came to that number .

I'm doing a comparison between rates in BC where basic insurance is owned by the Crown (ICBC.) Optional coverage such as collision and comprehensive is also purchased through them, but private companies offer them as well, but under certain circumstances.

Any how, in BC, full coverage for the Rabbit would be $1600. The Cayenne, $1900. I'm in awe because everyone raves about how insurance in Onterrible is much cheaper. Please correct me if I'm wrong because it's obvious I live in this West Coast bubble.

My 05 Cayenne Turbo is $1500 but also have home insurance with them so they give you a better deal.

Ah, okay. That makes sense.

I'm in the process of looking for a place to buy, but it's likely I may have to rent for a short time. Some companies also ask if you want to throw in a device that tracks your driving - do you guys opt in for it or no?

Never, I believe it would only help if you lived in place where there wasn't bumper to bumper traffic every day.

For 25% of the cost? Sure I'd dabble in being monitored. But really? They are not doing it out of the kindness of their little hearts. One false move, speeding, using your car for work? During a snow storm? High traffic time?

Also on your insurance quote. How old you are? Marital status? History? Will affect your rates.
Male, under 21, couple of tickets? A few accidents/claims? = rock and an expensive place.
