Need some advice about possible 911 purchase
Many folks here have to come to me over the years for advice buying cars, now it's my turn
A lot of you guys know me and my car, and how much I love it, but that I also loves cabrios. I've just come across the *perfect* cabrio for me - 1987 (G50 but still e-test exempt in Ontario), black over tan, no tail, stock except for the head unit. Fairly priced. This is the car I've lusted after since I was a kid. I could sell my 72, buy this (even with the awful exchange rate) and still have plenty left over for an upgrades, or to address any issues. The only thing holding me back is the potential for regret parting with what I know is a very special car. Having both isn't an option.
Some of you may remember a few years ago I had an 86 coupe that I considered keeping. I didn't, and that was a good decision. It was red over black, with a tail, and not a cabrio.
So talk me down off the ledge, or push me over it

I have this internal debate very frequently. I've never been able to pull the trigger on selling the 964. Good or bad decision, I don't know yet. I'd help you if I could.

My elderly Uncle once told me, "To hell with reasonable decisions!".
He always regretted selling his 911 and not getting another.
Get what you want...if you can't have both...get the one you want.

You wouldn't be lusting over the "new" car if the current scratched all of your itches.
We all like a new challenge, if you can't keep both could you at least overlap for the winter and sell the least desirable, if there is one, in the spring?

I don't think any one car will scratch all the itches. I love the rawness of the old car, but not always. Sometimes you want a fun drive that isn't all work. Sometimes you want a/c, or proper heat. Longhoods didn't come in full cabrios, and I don't really love the targas. The older cars are more nimble, but less powerful. I suppose if I had unlimited funds I could make it into a cabrio, drop a 3.6 in there and retrofit a/c, but for that price I could quite literally just buy the cabrio and have both (and not have space to put them!).
No, I can't overlap. No space and, being self-employed, I can't have $50k tied up for 6 months.

I might have the best wife on the planet. She's trying to find ways for me to have both, at least for a year or so
Space is the biggest issue.

I say go for it, top down adds a whole different experience to the air cooled enjoyment. If you can swing the two even for a short time that would be the cherry on top before deciding which one to finally sell off.

You need a bigger garage.

500 to 800 bucks gets you winter storage somewhere. That being said for me I would be too stressed out,but thats me. If the cab is your dream car then you should buy it without hesitation. I like the fact that you could have extra money also out of the deal. Change is good, fulfilling a childhood dream is even better!

my most regretted 'missed car purchase' opportunity was an off-white over brown leather 3.2 cabrio a friend was selling...drove great(like all 911's ) and had the right 'relaxed' character for ripping down the backroads on warm days.....
I want to add a 996 cabrio at some point...
