Default coolant

Is it okay to put Shellzone Antifreez Coolant in my 2008 987.1 CS? I don't have any Porsche specific stuff. If not, anyone close to or in Richmond Hill that does and can sell me some in the morning?

Coolant low light came on the dash today while driving then went off for the remainder of the drive (another 25 minutes). Was weird. But checked my level and it's below the minimum. Should I be concerned?

Porsche/VW/Audi/aftermarket, G12 or G13 spec coolant is what you need. VW/Audi dealer sells for >$30/gallon, concentrated mixture.
When cool, release the cap/pressure and check the level

If you're really stuck still tonight I have vw/Audi coolant and will be coming south down the 404 tonight so would be easy for me to stop in.

Just checked, it's the g13 stuff.

Pm me this afternoon if you still need it.

No, if you just tripped your sensor, chances are you only need about 500ml or less... This is fine to mix in with the rest of coolant volume already in the vehicle.

Regards,

Jonathon

There is about 30L of coolant in your car. Assuming it was mixed at 50/50, your freezing point is roughly -37C. Adding 500ml of water to the mix would bring you to roughly 49% Glycol by volume. This would mean dropping the freezing point by maybe 3C... so -34C...

Next time you add coolant, just remember then you add straight glycol.

If you are concerned about it freezing in the reservoir, just add it right before you drive to work or drive home. As long as you warm up the engine properly the T-Stat will open and no issue. Also the car will be warm..

Basically don't add it at night and park outside..

If you have a reverse osmosis water filter hooked up in your house, it produces distilled H2O, I believe, as it removes the minerals. My wife has used it in irons that calls for distilled H2O for years. It's worked for me when needed, in the Porsche, without consequence in 50/50 mixture with Porsche/or VW /Audi coolant. I may stand corrected by others here who are more mechanically expert. In an emergency, I would agree with JR above. If only slightly low level, light will go out within 1-2 minutes. In Boxster, it's easy to check level with rolled up paper towel strip and see if you come in contact with coolant within half inch-1 inch of lower minimum level indicator in neck of coolant bottle. Don't overfill-it's the extreme cold weather producing this; as engine warms up, if light will go off-indicates the level was only slightly low.

Never use tap water in any coolant system. A small amount would probably be ok, but there is too much calcium, lime etc in tap water.
