Ah, ha! That's why mine never needs cleaning. No doors. Roaring, open fire. Don't care about heat loss. Wood burning fireplace is cosmetic. M'lady loves it as they all have. Wood get's ya wood Clive.

You can install an insert that is able to have a blower force the heated air into the room. It usually takes in air for outside for the firebox. Look on-line.

In addition to all the quality advice I'd pay attention to what you burn in there and find a good wood supplier. Softwood is just for kindling and produces more sticky carbon. The big logs need to be properly seasoned hardwood, maple and alike. Sourcing a supplier that has dry good wood is half the battle.

yeah not looking to change anything just looking for cleaning advice .. i dont mind it sucking out my basement air and sending it up the chimney . I always run with the doors open. ( apparently this has been a fireplace debate for years ) . i use a starter log then I am burning pure hardwood after that . There is very little ash the next day.
After the embers have burned down and i am ready for bed, then i close the glass doors and leave the little doors open a the bottom of the fireplace. to continue the draft.
