Drifting
We do it all the time. 10 minutes training and anyone can put out a car fire in the initial stages. After 2 minutes its too late and with non race cars with all that plastic, glue and god knows what other products in cars these days - the gases given off during the fire are carcinogenic. But as I said - with the bottle right behind him - he could have had the flash over out in seconds. The law in Ontario is that there has to be a fire bottle on every pump island - they are there if you look around and don't panic. I would also suggest everyone have a bottle in their Porsche's even if they don't do DE's as you might save your own car or Joe Q Public's car that catches fire. Lately I've put out more of those then at the track. FYI: Had quite a few people tell me they don't know why it caught fire - it just came from the mechanic they say... There's a clue I tell them...

Heard this call come over the air last night while at the firehall.Initial update from dispatcher was the there had been several calls on a corvette on fire at the gas pumps.Guess no one knew what it was and thought it was a new vette.

They thought it was a new corvette ? This might explain why they finished the ping pong game before responding

Doug has a good point. I had a very small fire last year, about the size of the flame on a cigarette lighter. I had oil leaking from the return tubes and pooling inside the exhaust and it would catch fire when hot. I had my daughter in the car, too. Rushed inside a pharmacy and luckily they had a fire extinguisher. The next day I reinstalled my extinguisher mount, and it'll never leave the car again.

They carried the story on CKCO TV news last night. The story included footage from the video cameras at the pump. While filling the car the gas tank overflowed and leaked gas all over the side of the car. Michael then took a squeegee to attempt to get the gasoline off the body panels and he pulled the gas towards the rear of the car.
The car ignited. It looked like the fire was visible first through the wheel well but it was hard to say for sure. There was also a fire on the top of the engine.
The squeegee might not have been a factor in the fire, but the problem started when the gas overflowed from the fill tube.

That squeegee would have had a healthy dose of windshield washer fluid/methanol on it. Which he pushed into the hot engine bay.

There is not enough alcohol in that squeegie. There is a very small.chance the fuel nozle didn't turn off when the tank was full but probably what happened was that the owner kept pulling the filler trigger until the tank overflown. I don't think there is a way to stop this with any kind of design. In some states, it's illegal to keep trying to fill the tank after the auto shut off happens.
