New UAE buyer with Q's

I had my eye on a red 88/5 944 awhile back but bought a 92 Mercedes SL300-24, i am now looking for another car to add, its a white 89 944 (either an S2 or regular, will have to get the vin and check)
Anyways...the car is sold as is, and i remember awhile back when i was doing my research that if there is a taping noise when the car is running then the valves where bent but now while doing more research, it seems if the car has sat for awhile (and it has) then the lifters would be dry and to let it run for 20-30 mins and all should be well...any opinions on that?
What else should i be looking for before making a jump?
