Just a quick question to Dubai residents, i am planning to move there within the next couple of months, i have been there alot but never noticed, are there alot of 993's and do you have any idea about the possible price quota ? and do they have any heat problems ? i was once browsing and i stumbled upon some auction and saw a 996 white that went off for 20k$ , would appreciate the help

Well, there were a lot of 993's once the 996 came out (in 1999), but now i rarely see a 993. Love them, the 993 Turbo S is on my 'i have to get' list one day

I have no clue on the 993's heat issues, i do not think they have one, but don't take my word for it.

Pices would be anything from Dhs 100,000-300,000(US$27,000-81,000)

I just had a bad experience with a mechanic, so I want to pass it along for people to avoid.

The whole story is in the 944 forum, but in a nutshell.

The Mechanic that used to work on the 944 had already ordered a part the car needed when I purchased it. So since he already had ordered the part I figured I would use him to put it in.

1- he was unreachable for two weeks and his secretary or anyone else who answered the phone never knew when he would be coming back.
2 - When I did finally reach him, he said sure we will get it right in. Can I bring it tomorrow? Sure thing. When I show up 11:30 he is not there, I call his cell and he says he is on the way. 45 minutes later he shows.
3 - He didn't do the work his (seemingly untrained) grease monkey did it. (he had to ask several times what he had to do to replace the part.
4 - The shop seemed to have no diagnostic equipment. (maybe it was locked away, but I didn't see any)
5 - He charged me 750 AED for a part I can get online for 250. I called him on this price difference and he wouldn't change anything, and would not produce any receipt showing what he paid that for it. In fact he took 15 minutes to try to figure what the part cost. (even with overseas shipment I could have gotten it for 350 max.
6 - The shop was in the middle of an empty lot. NO ROADS to it. Now maybe it's me but I dont think most porsche's would enjoy the off road experience (with one notable exclusion)
7 - he was supposed to have the maintanence records of my car and he did not. When asked specific questions on important maintanence items (water pump/timing belt) he did not know when they had been done.
8 - In general conversation he complained about any car older than 6 years old falling apart and constantly breaking... This is why you are in business to MAINTAIN CARS... geeesh...

So anyway, the shop is called Intelligent System, and it is run by Andy. (Andy had previously worked at both house of Cars and Quartermile, maybe there is a reason he isn't working at those places anymore hmmmmmm)

Hosrom gave me the name of a mechanic that I have not tried yet. I will be giving him a go on the next batch of things I need. I would have used him for this one too, if Andy hadn't already had the part.

Brian,
First of all, i really, really apologise for not calling you at all. I have been working like mad in the office, and by the time i reach home, i am dead tired, have a quick bite and sleep till next day.

Secondly, Andy is a complete f@cker, he does NOT know anything about water-cooled Porsches. I TAUGHT him the basics of the 944, and i can say that to him in his face. Andy got fired from HOC (House Of Cars) for being lousy, he then got fired again from QuateMiles, for being a ***** and again, not knowing what he does.

I even showed Andy, at one time, the prices of parts w/shipping and my progress (pictures), he was just shocked, i never been to a shop since.....October 2005 because no one follows the manual's specs (torque, clearances etc) and they ***-U-ME everything.

Brian, i am dead sorry for that bad experience, let me know what you need, in parts or work, we can figure things out from A to Z (from where to get the part and who to install it), being as economical as possible since 99% of all the pre-1994 parts for Porsche's are not in stock from Al naboodah. Hell, i will even work on the car for you, but we will talk in details about it.

No Problem.. Just got off the phone with ya.

Like I said on the phone and for anyone else out there... I look at it like this... it was a cheap lesson in the grand scheme of things. I learned what kind of person he was, and what crappy work he and his shop did for a 1000 AED. I could have been out huge money to learn the lesson if it had been something else. Plus now anyone else coming to or in Dubai gets to know someone to avoid....

I have no heat issues with my 993 whatsoever, but it is important to unsure the oil cooler works properly. I import oil for it though as I think the 0W-40 supplied by Mobil here is completely useless for air-cooled engines. I use the new Mobil1 5W-50 supersyn racing-formula which the McLaren uses. Car runs very well on it.
Prices varies, Quartermile in Dubai has had a C2S for ages, priced at Dhs 189,500. You can see early 993's advertised privately down to Dhs 100-110k but I would spend a bit more in order to obtain a presumably better example.
