Default 944 rally car??

Sorry if this has been asked before but has there ever been a 944 turbo rally car?? I was going to sell my 944 but do you think it would hold up in rally events if the chasis is seam welded?

There is a similar thread in the 924/944/968 forum.

Anything is possible with nearly any car. How much money do you want to spend?

well there is a canadian who has done it and entered into one race but DNF due to rear suspension. I just wonder if the 944 turbo could even compete with these new model cars off road.

Prep work would be about 10-14k through a good shop and thats about what I would spend buying a used rally car so its hard to say it would be worth it unless it could compete for overall wins in PGT or Group 5.

You can buy a good used rally car for half that price.

PGT is a class for AWD cars. Building an AWD 951 would be very interesting - but then you'd be in the Open class. And you'd be looking at spending a lot more than $10-$14K.

If you are serious about getting in to rallying - I would recommend buying a well built, strong, used car. There are a lot of VWs out there that make good starter cars. If you still can afford it - and find that it truly is the most fun you can have in the front seat of a car - then build your G5 951.

Well there is a shop that can do minimum prep for 10k but that doesnt include seam welding and a few other things if your going all out. I think Im about to buy a Suburu RS (WRX engine and drivetrain) for 11k. I should know here in the next 2-3 days. The 944 I was referring to is this one:http://www.rallysport.ca/projects/michel_944/

About 5 years ago there was a couple of guys out of Montreal that rallied a white 951. They finished a few rallies with respectable placings... I wish I could remember there names for you. I will dig through my timesheets this weekend and see if I can find out more info for you.

The universal advice is - BUY your first rally car. Spend time and money competing and learning - rather than wrenching.

Then - once you know you love it and want to move up - you can build up a car that meets your needs.

There are SO many better choices than a 944 for a rally car. From a learning and fun to drive perspective - a low-powered FWD car will be the best choice. It will teach you to DRIVE, carry speed through a corner, preserve momentum, left foot brake etc.

That's the way to start. Of course - lots of people don't - I built all three of my rally cars and went from RWD to AWD without every driving FWD. But I don't think I did as well as I could. Sure - I won a provincial championship - but as much through luck and perserverance as skill and effort. And I had to stop (for the time being) because I ran out of money. I would have been able to keep going if I'd done things more economially - like BOUGHT a car instead of building one up.

Just some food for thought. It's a great sport - I encourage you to try it - and hope that some of this advice will help you go far and fast!
