Registering or titling a race car in California?
I did some searching on Rennlist and the California DMV site, but couldn't find an answer. Do race cars have titles in California? I'm looking for a used race car to use as a track day toy. I would be trailering it to and from the track, so I know I wouldn't need it registered for the street, but a title of ownership? And another question would be do I need to pay sales tax? Or do people even title their track/ race cars? Up until now I have always had a registered and titled street car modded for the track, not a full blown track car.

Bill of Sale
FWIW, most race cars, not street/race cars, but dedicated race cars are transferred, owner to owner on a bill of sale. I doubt whether these buyers volunteer to send sales tax to Sacramento.
If the car is not registered in CA, a theft recovery may be more difficult. I don't know if the authorities dedicate any significant amount of time to searching for unregistered race cars.

Drifting
Unless you are flat towing or using a dolly (wheels touching ground), or parking on the street, it doesn't need to be registered. If you do register you can do a non-operable vehicle registration to keep the registration current and avoid back fees, much cheaper than normal registration and no need for proof of smog or insurance (can't drive on street).
