Default Advice on Toyo RS1

Since I'm not racing this year I won't have the DOT restriction and looking at options for a "better" longer lasting tire. Have been using Hankooks (DE) or R7(race/time trial) in the past.

Have ordered a set of RS1's for a DE next week (hopefully PTS can get them shipped this week) .

Any advice on setup for these?
In my early DE days I tried "take off" Michelin slicks and never felt good about them. Not sure if I just wasn't giving them enough time to get hot or what... Can I expect the RS1 come up to temp quickly like an R7 or do I need to be more patient like a true slick?

What hot pressure to shoot for? The only docs I see says "high 30' to low 40's"... This is for a 2800lb 993, so assuming upper end of the scale 38f-40r ?

Anything else I should know?

The RS1 is our spec tire for Spec Cayman. I am new to this class and so far I only have one race weekend on them. I came from spec boxster which uses dot toyo rr's, but I also have experience with r7's on both my cayman and past cars including a 996, and 997 gt3.

My initial impressions are that the RS1's come up to temp quickly like an r7 does and grip similar to an r7. I felt hot temperatures in the 35-37 range were better than the high 30's/low 40's you mentioned. I also don't see these rs1's lasting any longer than an r7 does considering my rears felt like they were falling off quite a bit by the end of the enduro on day 3. The wear indicators on my rears agree they will not be lasting much longer

I will be using this same set for practice at the lime rock club race in april and can report back how they feel as far as longevity after that event.
Until then, maybe some others with more experience with the tire can chime in.

Your weight is similar to ours in SPC.

I think you'll benefit from less aggressive camber setup, especially for the rear weight bias of the 993. Otherwise you're gonna chew through the inner half of the RS1 pretty quickly.

I'd start with -2.5 rear and -3 front and go from there re. feel and tire temps (inner-middle-outer).

Hot temp target is a bit of a personal choice but shoot for mid-30s to start. It's easy, especially with higher ambients, to overcook the tire.

I personally love the Michelin slicks for the 993 but it takes a fair amount of spring to get them up to temperature quickly - otherwise they can feel unsettled. Also depends what model and sidewall height you were using for rears.

Like Manny I have one race weekend's worth of experience on RS1s at Sebring. All my other experience has been on Hooser R7.

I feel like the RS1 and R7 are very similar in all aspects except for overall wear. I think I got slightly less longevity out of the RS1 - perhaps 80% of the life of an R7.

I'm curious how they hold up at Lime Rock next month which is a track I know very well.

Thanks guys... From what you are saying, I'm going the wrong way, these don't last any longer than r7... I thought I read that one of the criteria for selecting them for SPC was better longevity...

Oh well, tires will be here on Sat, I'll see soon enough how they do.

AHA, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha. I am sure it has nothing to do with PCA getting a better kick back from Toyo, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha... And yes, I am building a SPC.

Of the 3 brands mentioned, my preference is the Hankook C51 for grip, consistency, and longevity. Oh and price also!

I used RS1's last season on my <2800lb 993 for 12 TT races.
heavy tire on scales but I didn't notice it on track.
around 8hc -1 sec
around 12hc -2 sec
around 16hc -3 sec
toyo has such a generous contingency program I never had to use these over 18hc.
fresh tires were used for timed events, 6-8 laps per hc.
after 8hc I used them for open track and practice sessions, 20-30 minutes sessions.
never had any issues with wear.
PTS heat cycled the tires, they came up to temp during a warm up lap, quicker than the oil thermostat opens.
I liked 37F 38R pressure hot, but if your car pic is current, my car has more aero and maybe lower(98mm in front).
but I tried these as low at 35 and as high as 42, they didn't get sloppy or greasy so not a big deal to test out different pressures.
