Last point....... I don't know any true race cars with stereo systems......

Maybe that is what F1 needs to do to increase spectators' enjoyment.....

I'm an intermediate driver doing DE's. I sometimes throw on some music when solo, sometimes not. It's off with an instructor and I expect it would be off racing as well.

One of the skills I'm working on is I'm extremely analytical and I need to learn to do things without thinking about every action so it becomes instinctual. I'll overthink pretty much everything and not react naturally, which introduces a sometimes significant lag in my response to a situation. Music distracts the cognitive portion of my brain and causes me to use (and therefore devleop) emotion and instinct more. So right now there are times when that's a good thing for my personal skills development. Usually that would be something like when I've learned something new pretty well but still need to get some more seat time to solidify the lesson.

I know I'll probably regret this but I just ran across a clip from ten or twelve years ago when I moved to Florida for a while. I'm not sure if it's conclusive either way in this debate but I thought it was funny.

I'ts been a long time since I've driven a street car on the track so the only radio I have plays mostly the witty banter of my teammates on the grid. I don't know about my driving but my videos have improved quite a bit. I also remember the air conditioner fondly.

In more than one lemons race there have been cars blaring music in particular a #187 blasting gangsta rap... you always know where that car is and I'd say it was distracting for me at my low skill level.

This is very interesting because when I was 25 and First Signed off as a solo Driver I found my Van Halen tape, I Had 3 Amplifiers in the car with Twin Subs and 10 speakers... (I was 25) ... So I figured why not give it a try on the track? I mean it is always fun to crank the music once in a while and drive fast on the street right? I must say, it was good for about 1/2 lap until I realized that I was giving the signal to pass more and more... I had suddenly become "traffic"... It slowed me way down.. No concentration, couldn't hear the car, bounced off the rev limiter once.. So I shut it off and have never done it again.. If you were the only car on the track and were just cruising, it would be fun.

Listening to music while on track makes no sense to me. IMO, when driving, the focus should be on all aspects of driving and nothing else. Drivers need to be alert to changing circumstances and ready to adapt quickly, which means avoiding unnecessary distractions. And unlike surgery, sensory input in the form of sound is an important input when driving.

If you have to be entertained while on track in a car, you are in the wrong sport. This is serious business, even in DE.
